Abstract / Description

This book has been prepared to share with students and colleagues interested in physics the original content of the electromagnetic field theory courses that the author has taught since 1993 at the second-year undergraduate level in Faculties of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The theory is treated within a framework that brings together field laws and boundary, transition, edge, and singularity conditions within the same physical model. For this purpose, canonical geometries are used systematically; discontinuous and singular structures are incorporated into the field equations, through complementary postulates, in the sense of Schwartz–Sobolev distributions. Within the author's Newtonian holistic view of classical field theories, the book presents his conceptual contributions to electromagnetic theory through the systematic classification of physical quantities, the reorganization of static field equations, and new perspectives on electromagnetic modelling. The transitional structure of magnetostatic field theory with electrostatic field theory through the principle of duality is emphasized in detail. In the second edition, the theoretical development is accompanied by a total of 18 solved-problem sets intended to prepare undergraduate students for midterm and final examinations, with intermediate steps shown in detail. The author recommends reading this book together with Vector Calculus for Classical Electromagnetism (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.22896528) and Vector Calculus for Classical Electromagnetism: Problems, Proofs, and Complete Solutions (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.22958987). In this way, the definitions, proofs, and applications of the mathematical tools used in field theory can be accessed directly within the same notation.
