Abstract / Description

Abstract Research indicates that early traumatic experiences can profoundly affect a child's ability to manage emotions, develop social skills, and adapt effectively. Still, the impact of trauma on children goes beyond just emotional and behavioral dimensions. The enduring consequences of early trauma on the development of children are projected to be significant, particularly regarding its long‐lasting influence on their cognitive functions. Exploring the effects of early adverse experiences on cognitive development is of paramount importance in practice. The main objective of this narrative review is to clarify how trauma interferes with cognitive development by impacting brain structures and functions, as well as to offer theoretical backing for approaches in education, psychology, and healthcare, aiding in the formulation of specific strategies that can foster healthy development for children who have gone through trauma.
